10 UNIQUE (& CHEAP!) NYC DATE IDEAS: FALL 2015
Ahhh, Autumn - crisp air, cozy sweaters, and apples and pumpkins waiting to be picked…NOT. No offense to the couples who love spending hours on end choosing the most edible apples and carvable pumpkins amongst fields of hay and masses of kids, I just have different ideas when it comes to unique, affordable Fall dates. Sure, it may be above Netflixing and chilling, but there’s more to do with bae this Autumn than Fright Fest and picking seasonal fruits.
I usually only serve hot platters of summer and winter date ideas, but by popular demand, I’ve served you a special edition of Autumnal outings that go perfectly on their own or paired together.
October in New York City means there’s reminders of Halloween everywhere you turn. I’m not suggesting you both throw costumes on and go to the Village Halloween Parade, (Horrible date option. I speak from experience. Don’t ask. I was young.) but perhaps check out some body parts and eat some pie? The Morbid Anatomy Museum is as disgustingly intriguing as it sounds. Top your visit to scope out their upcoming House of Wax exhibit with a scrumptious slice of pie. Just down the street, Four and Twenty Black Birds bakes locally sourced ingredients into confectionary perfection. Buy a whole pie and dissect it together! (Exhibit opens October 23)
If you want less gore and more quirky creepiness, then this unusual, but cozy bar is right up your hidden alley. Inspired by 19th century Parisian absinthe dens, Apothéke serves refreshing “prescriptions” with ingredients straight from their rooftop garden. Their jewel-toned cocktails are the crown and glory of the establishment - so much so that for a pretty penny, they offer classes on how to concoct them. The old school interior houses live music four times a week.
Museum dates have become a classic date option for any season, but this Fall step it up a notch and show bae how cultured you really can be. Behold the beauty of the local art show - a great way to get to know up-and-coming artists, sip freely, indulge in some tunes and maybe even purchase an art piece. The folks at Blot Shop Collective have gathered a handful of incredible young artists for their B.S. Art Show. The affair is so beyond secret (what else did you think the B.S. stood for?) that only RSVP’d attendees receive the location of the show 24 hours prior. Sexy, artsy, oh and…free with RSVP. (October 10)
I have nothing against apples, but why would you pick your own when you can enjoy all of its readily available splendors? Enjoy apples in all of their glory at Cider Week NYC. Not juice, but fermented apple juice. Like wine is fermented grapes - get it? Take in all the yumminess of pressed cider varieties and then head over to renowned Carpe Donuts NYC. Named 2013’s BEST DONUTS by New York Magazine, the famous food truck serves everything from apple cider donuts to…I couldn’t leave this out…donuts à la mode. (November 6-15)
Food isn’t the only way to someone’s heart - laughter is it’s fiercest competitor. Join the likes of comedy greats, Gilbert Gottfried, Lewis Black and John Leguizamo to name a few, for the 12th annual New York Comedy Festival. Taking over eight different NYC venues, the festival provides comedy events for every giggle palette. What is my millennial twenty-something recommendation? A night of Urban Dictionary with James Davis. (November 10-15)
Cupid may have shot you with his bow and arrow, but now you can shoot your own. Step all the way out of the box this Fall and take bae out for some archery lessons. Try the Pro Line Archery Lanes or Gotham Archery for two amazing facilities where you’re able to rent equipment, learn from professionals and slay your targets.
Maybe you’re a little more old fashioned when it comes to date outings? Understandable. If you idolize love stories like that of Danny and Sandy or even Rashad and New New, strap on some roller skates and get ready to ride. The Pier 2 Roller Rink at Brooklyn Bridge Park sets the perfect scene for a romantic daytime or evening date. And by perfect scene I mean you’ll be skating with amazing cityscape views. Totally cause for a couple’s selfie or two.
Give dinner and a movie a comfortable, but posh spin this Autumn. Catch some of the latest feature films in style at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. BAM is a multi-arts center and has been home to artists, their ideas and their audiences for more than 150 years. Grab a BAM Burger and a Cherry Jubilee from the BAMcafé before watching your movie of choice in the gorgeous BAM Rose Cinemas.
When was the last time you smelled something that triggered a sweet memory? Create a new scented memory you can take with you at Fragrance Shop NYC. For over 22 years, the aromatic apothecary has specialized in creating one of a kind fragrances for every customer. The ingredients are noted and kept in the boutique’s file for easy reordering and can be incorporated into perfume oils, sprays, lotions, massage oils and bath salts for both men and women. Unique date, smell-goods and fresh memories; a win-win-win situation.
If you’re an all for fun and games, roll-with-the-punches pair, step out of the box in a different way. Visit Le Poisson Rouge for a night of vast possibilities. Part restaurant, part multimedia art cabaret, it lends itself to a variety of audiences. Their most popular date night option? Their Le Drag Bingo nights where drag-queen hostess Linda Simpson and her burlesque babes take guests through a colorful night playing for big prizes. Participation is free - just pay for your bingo boards. With a calendar stocked with events from I Love The 90’s Dance Party to Basement Bhangra, there’s something for every couple.
Wishing you the coziest, most unique date experiences this Autumn. Be sure to let me know which dates you try and how they went! XO
