SELF REMINDERS AND MENTAL NUDGES

Bad things happen all the time. Sometimes they happen to good people. I like to think they’re just reminders of what could be on the other side. Reminders of a silver lining amongst all the fog. Reminders that things always get worse before they get better. Maybe I’m tooting my own horn or maybe my reminders serve me right, but this week was all about me. This week I was nudged on a few incidences, so let’s call this is an ode to self reminders.

Reminders that…

I am but only one person - I can try my best, but I cannot please everyone around me.

Even though I’m overwhelmed when friends and family turn to me for advice, they do it for a reason. They do it not because I give the best advice, but because I always lend an ear and finish off with an embrace. I should never stop being that person. With that said…

Just because you lend yourself to others, does not mean they will offer themselves to you in your time of need. I should never do things for people with attached expectations. Sadly, reciprocation is seldom these days. With that said…

Even some of the people I care about most will not give two shits about what I say or do. I can’t live my life waving flags, dropping hints or simply shouting out for the smallest bit of attention. Just because something is deserved, doesn’t mean that It will be received. With that said…

I am a queen. I am prone to at least 100 likes on an Instagram selfie, but the beauty of my mind is incalculable. I may shed a tear in times of frustration just to wet my thoughts and clear my mind. I am stronger than I appear to others. I am even stronger than I appear in my reflection. I am my own 9th wonder of the world. I am a priceless jewel not to be treated like glass. Caitlyn Siehl reminded me when she wrote, “I am a world that cannot be explored in one day. I am not a place for cowards.” Caitlyn knows, I just tend to forget.

This week I’ve learned to pay attention to detail. There are shafts of light even in a vortical universe of black clouds. Be aware of yourself. You are a human being, not a rug. Always be good to others, but don’t forget to be good to yourself. Self reminders.
